Design and Photography
The resident and apartment assistant recruitment campaign is one of the most substantial projects within the Residence Life department at Rutgers University, which operates one of the largest collegiate housing programs in the country. As a senior designer, I led a team of designers and photographers to create digital and print advertisements that would inform prospective applicants about the position.
Rutgers University has a very diverse group of students, but when it came to the resident and apartment assistants, it wasn’t reflective of the student population. With the 2019–2020 campaign, we wanted to inspire students of every background to apply for the positions available, specifically men of color, who were the most underrepresented.
The process began with photographing various resident/apartment assistants for the campaign. These photographs were used on print advertisements and social media posts.
The assistants also did an Instagram takeover on the Residence Life account and were interviewed about their experiences in the position for our website. Scattered throughout the poster, flyers, and social media posts are the words used by the assistants to describe themselves and their position.
Together with the black and white photos, a system of graphic, colorful shapes and patterns were used to contrast and highlight the diverse people that made the campaign what it is.
